To many of you this might just be the least shocking news of 2017, but there is some actual science behind the concerns that our president might not be thinking straight. According to the International Business Times who interviewed Trump’s former doctor, the president takes a handful of pills daily, including small doses of the drug finasteride (sold under the brand names Proscar and Propecia among others) to treat male pattern baldness. What’s possibly concerning about this drug is that it has been linked with several negative side effects, including mental confusion.
But whether this drug is part of the cause or there’s some other reason for his behavior, mental health experts like John D Gartner have been recently speaking out about the president, saying he “is dangerously mentally ill and temperamentally incapable of being president.”
In December, three leading professors of psychiatry from Harvard Medical School and the University of California urged President Obama to order a “full medical and neuropsychiatric evaluation” of the then President-elect.
“His widely reported symptoms of mental instability – including grandiosity, impulsivity, hypersensitivity to slights or criticism, and an apparent inability to distinguish between fantasy and reality – lead us to question his fitness for the immense responsibilities of the office.”
But while mental health experts warn that Trump is unfit for the office, the good news for the president is that the House just voted that mentally ill people can buy guns again, so at least there’s that.
